Landslide susceptibility assessment using Frequency Ratio, a case study of northern Pakistan
The northern Pakistan is attributed with rough terrain, active seismicity, monsoon rains, and therefore hosts to variety of geohazards. Among the geohazards, landslides are the most frequent hazard with devastating impacts on economy and society. However, for most of the northern Pakistan, landslide susceptibility maps are not available which can be used for landslide hazard mitigation. This study aims to develop a remote sensing based landslide inventory, analysing their spatial distribution and develop the landslide susceptibility map. The area, selected for this study is comprised of Haramosh valley, Bagrote valley and some parts of Nagar valley, in the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP) in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan. The SPOT-5 satellite image was used to develop a landslide inventory
which was subsequently verified in the field. The landslide causative factors of topographic attributes (slope and aspect), geology, landcover, distances from fault, road and streams were used to evaluate their influence on the spatial distribution of landslides. The study revealed that the distance to road, slope gradient
has the significant influence on the spatial distribution of the landslides, followed by the geology. The derived results were used in the Frequency ratio technique to develop a landslide susceptibility map. The developed landslide susceptibility map can be utilized for landslide mitigation in the study area

Compact Electronically Reconfigurable WiMAX Band- Notched Ultra-wideband MIMO Antenna
A low-profile electronically reconfigurable WiMAX band-notched dual port multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) antenna design for ultra-wideband application has been presented. The two symmetrical MIMO antenna elements proposed in this work exhibit a good impedance match (VSWR ≤ 2) over frequency band of 3 to 12 GHz, while offering high isolation. The decoupling structure is used to enhance the isolation level above 25 dB over the entire UWB spectrum. The reconfigurable band notch characteristic in MIMO design is achieved by inserting PIN diodes along the filtering Ω-shaped slotted structure in main radiators. Notch appears for WiMAX 3.5 GHz (3.2 - 3.8 GHz) frequency band by switching the PIN diode to ‘ON’ state. The proposed antenna is fabricated and measured, the results suggest its appropriateness for UWB applications where WiMAX band notch characteristics may be desired on-demand
A Compact Single Layer Reflectarray Antenna Based on Circular Delay-Lines for X-band Applications
This paper presents a compact single layer reflectarray antenna based on a diagonally notched square patch and a pair of circular delay lines, for X-band applications. The length and width of circular delay-lines are varied and optimized to attain a linear phase range of more than 600º. The effect of incident angle in TE and TM modes at 0º, 15º and 30º is studied, which offers stable angular phase range. The hybrid Finite Element Boundary Integral (FEBI) method is used for simulation of the whole reflectarray system comprising of 27 × 27 elements and being fabricated on a low cost FR-4 laminate. The measured gain of 24.5 dBi with aperture efficiency of 49.5% is achieved at 10 GHz. The proposed design provides the measured 1-dB gain bandwidth of 12.5% and 3-dB gain bandwidth of 34%. The simulated and measured side-lobe-levels and cross polarizations are less than –25 dB and –40 dB respectively
Copper Phthalocyanine Surface-type Photocapacitive Sensor
In this study the photocapacitive behavior of organic semiconductor, photosensitive material copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) were investigated. Thin film of the copper phthalocyanine was deposited by vacuum evaporation on glass substrate with silver surface-type electrodes and Ag/CuPc/Ag photo capacitive sensor was fabricated. It was shown that under filament lamp illumination up to 1000 lx the capacitance of the Ag/ CuPc/Ag photo capacitive sensor increased continuously up to 20% with respect of dark condition. It is assumed that photo capacitive response of the sensor is associated with polarization due to the transfer of photo-generated electrons and holes

Hybrid Weighted Least Square Multi-Verse Optimizer (WLS–MVO) Framework for Real-Time Estimation of Harmonics in Non-Linear Loads

The electric power quality has become a serious concern for electric utilities and end users owing to its undesirable effects on system capabilities and performance. Harmonic levels on power systems have been pronounced to a greater extent with the continuous growth in the application of solid-state and reactive power compensatory devices. Harmonics are the key constituents that are mainly responsible for power quality deterioration. Power system harmonics need to be correctly estimated and filtered to increase power quality. This research work focuses on accurate estimation of power system harmonics with the proposed hybrid weighted least-square multi-verse optimizer (WLS–MVO) based framework. Multi-verse optimizer replicates the phenomenon of the formation of new universes as described by multi-verse theory to solve complex real-world optimization problems. The proposed WLS–MVO framework is tested and validated by estimating the harmonics present in multiple test signals with different noise levels. Amplitudes and phases of harmonics present in the polluted signal were estimated, and the framework computational time was compared with the previously developed technique’s results which are reported in the literature. There was 80% reduction in computational time and 82% improvement in terms of accuracy in estimating harmonics using WLS–MVO as compared to previously developed techniques. The performance of the developed framework is further validated by estimating the harmonics present in the real-time voltage and current waveforms obtained from axial flux permanent magnet generator (AFPMSG), uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and light-emitting diode (LED). The purposed technique technique outperforms the already-developed techniques, in terms of accuracy and computational time.This research received no external funding
Prevalence of hepatitis B and C and assessment of responsible risk factors among the vulnerable β-thalassemic patients of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan
Approximately 350 million patients of hepatitis B and 170 million patients of Hepatitis C are present worldwide according to WHO. Many risk factors are involved in the transmission of theses deadly viral infections but blood transfusion in Beta thalassemic patients is working with two faces, one as remedy and the other is key risk factor in the spread of silent killers. Thalassemia patients registered in Combine Military Hospital (CMH) Rawalakot and Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Hospital, Muzaffarabad Azad Jammu and Kashmir Pakistan were studied for the viral hepatitis B and C prevalence. A total of 303 (including 164 males and 139 females) individuals, aged between 1 and 12 years were studied. All the understudy participants were interviewed through questionnaire method. After taking written consent from each participant or guardian, 5 ml of blood was collected from each participant and brought to the working laboratory for HBV and HCV screening through ICT kit method. All ICT positive samples were further confirmed through ELISA. Individuals 25(8.2%) were found positive for both hepatitis B surface Antigen (HBsAg) and Anti hepatitis C antibody (Anti-HCV antibody) after initial screening with no coinfection of both diseases. Out of 25 total infected individuals, 05(1.6%) were found HBsAg positive and 20(6.6%) were found anti-HCV positive. All the ICT positive individuals were further confirmed by quantitative Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and 23(7.6%) individuals were confirmed for both hepatitis B and C including 05(1.6%) HBsAg positive as well as 18(5.9%) anti-HCV antibody positive individuals. We can conclude that 8.2% prevalence of hepatitis B and C among thalassemic patients is an alarming health concern which directly indicates to pay attention for ensuring 100% safe blood transfusion

A Multiobjective Artificial-Hummingbird-Algorithm-Based Framework for Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch Considering Renewable Energy Sources

This paper proposes a new artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA)-based framework to investigate the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem which is a critical problem in the capacity of power systems. This paper aims to improve the performance of power systems by minimizing two distinct objective functions namely active power loss in the transmission network and total voltage deviation at the load buses subjected to various constraints within multiobjective framework. The proposed AHA-based framework maps the inherent flight and foraging capabilities exhibited by hummingbirds in nature to determine the best settings for the control variables (i.e., voltages at generation buses, the tap positions of on-load tap-changing transformers (OLTCs) and the size of switchable shunt VAR compensators) to minimize the overall objective functions. A multiobjective optimal reactive power dispatch framework (MO-ORPD) considering renewable energy sources (RES) and load uncertainties is also proposed to minimize the individual objectives simultaneously. The competency and robustness of the proposed AHA-based framework is validated and tested on IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 39 bus test systems to solve the ORPD problem. Eventually, the results are compared with other well-known optimization techniques in the literature. Box plots and statistical tests using SPSS are performed and validated to justify the effectiveness of the proposed framework.This research received no external funding
